I am an artist living near Selby, North Yorkshire. After leaving school I studied for a National Diploma in Art and Design at York College of Arts and Technology, and later specialised in Textile Design at Huddersfield Polytechnic. It was during this time at Huddersfield that I began using oil pastels to illustrate the fabrics and yarns that I designed. I found it difficult to find my feet in the art industry and after completing a secretarial course I spent the next twenty years working in administration. Every few years I would go back to producing art work but my work commitments didn't leave me enough energy or time to pursue my love of art. In 2011 my life changed forever - I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Both my sister and my father had lost their life to cancer whilst they were in their 40s. Luckily my cancer was discovered at an early stage following a routine mammogram. I underwent a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstruction and the cancer was completely removed. The diagnosis of cancer exacerbated the anxiety that I was already suffering. I turned to producing art again, initially just as therapy for myself. I began to paint friends' pets and I soon began to get some commissions. I have decided now to put all my energies into my art.
I'm currently loving my life and enjoying painting - which I wouldn't be doing unless I'd had cancer - funny old world isn't it?
